We often talk about faith in terms of quiet prayer and Sunday routines. But sometimes, faith requires something raw. It demands that we step out of our comfort zones, put away our pride, and do whatever it takes to protect the ones we love.
In the Gospels, we meet a man who showed us exactly what a father’s faith looks like when everything is on the line.
His name was Jairus.
When Status Doesn't Matter
Jairus was a ruler of the synagogue in Capernaum. In his community, he was a man of immense status, prestige, and influence. He was deeply respected, well-off, and accustomed to leading others.
But none of his titles or achievements mattered when his world began to crumble. His twelve-year-old daughter—his only daughter—was dying at home.
Imagine the desperation in his heart. He had likely tried every medicine and called every doctor, watching helplessly as her breath grew weaker. In that moment of absolute helplessness, Jairus didn’t let fear paralyze him. He chose a path of radical humility.
The Radical Act of Kneeling
Jairus left his dying daughter's bedside to find Jesus, who had just stepped off a boat into a massive, pressing crowd. For a religious leader of his rank, publicly approaching an unconventional teacher like Jesus was a massive risk. It could have ruined his reputation and cost him his career.
But true love pushes pride aside.
When Jairus found Jesus, he didn't demand an audience based on his importance. He fell at Jesus’ feet. Picture that scene: a wealthy, highly respected ruler of the community, prostrate in the dusty street, begging an itinerant preacher for his daughter's life. He didn't just ask for help; he surrendered his pride completely.
"My little daughter is dying. Please come and put your hands on her so that she will be healed and live." (Mark 5:23)
Jesus saw his heart, and He immediately started walking with him.
"Only Believe"
Just as hope was within reach, the unthinkable happened. A messenger from Jairus’ house pushed through the crowd with devastating news: “Your daughter is dead. Why trouble the Teacher any further?”
Can you imagine the sudden, crushing weight that fell on Jairus? The world probably went silent around him. The doubt, the grief, and the regret must have been overwhelming. If only I had found Jesus sooner. If only the crowd hadn't delayed us.
But before the panic could completely swallow Jairus, Jesus turned to him. Ignoring the messenger, Jesus looked straight into the eyes of the grieving father and gave him a command that still echoes for us today:
"Do not be afraid; only believe."
Jesus didn't ask Jairus to understand. He didn't ask him to fix it. He simply asked him to anchor his heart in trust and keep walking forward. And in perfect, silent obedience, Jairus did.
The Miracle of the Unseen Walk
We often focus on the miracle at the end of the story, but the greatest act of faith happened during the walk back to the house. Jairus walked with Jesus knowing his daughter was already dead. He had to fight every human instinct to give up and weep. He chose to trust the Word of God over the reality of the bad news.
When they arrived, amid the loud wailing of the mourners, Jesus took the father and mother into the room. He took the young girl by the hand and said, "Talitha cumi" (which means, "Little girl, I say to you, arise").
Immediately, she stood up and began to walk.
The Blueprint of a Father’s Faith
Jairus’ story is a beautiful reminder of how men, especially fathers and leaders, are called to profess their faith. It wasn’t a faith of loud theological debates; it was a faith of action, humility, and protection.
- He took responsibility: He fought for his family's spiritual and physical well-being.
- He swallowed his pride: He didn't care what society thought; he knelt before the Lord.
- He held the line: When the bad news came, he chose to believe Jesus instead of the world's reports.
May we all carry the unshakeable faith of Jairus on our wrists and in our hearts—remembering that no matter how desperate the situation seems, if we put our pride in the dust and place our trust in Jesus, He can bring life to the heaviest places.
